Why It’s Worth Upgrading to a Wireless N Router

Wireless routers have become commonplace these days, with most laptops, netbooks and smartphones having integrated Bluetooth or wireless connectivity. This makes it really easy to set up a home network, or use your laptop anywhere in your house, without needing a LAN cable for internet. Many ISP’s include free wireless routers that are limited to older wireless technology, and lots of people are happy with their functioning older routers, so what makes it worthwhile to upgrade to a wireless N router?

There are many improvements on the new generation wireless N routers, and once you get past all the technical jargon, the advantages far outweigh the extra cost. The first feature you should know about, is security. Improved security protocols are standard with N routers, allowing you to use WAP2 for network security, instead of the older WEP security protocols. This helps limit the chance of people nearby to you leaching off you internet connection, or intruding into your home network. Internal firewalls have improved on N-routers, as well as the ability to use multiple ISP accounts on the same DSL line, without technical hassles.

Data transfer speed is much-improved with N-routers. The vast majority of modern PC’s and laptops come with Gigabit LAN ports, but the older 802.11g wireless routers only have 10/100 LAN ports. This slows down data transfer between computers and other devices on your home network.

The Netgear WNR 2200 N300 is one of the new 802.11n routers, and it has a USB port. This allows data storage devices to be connected to it, so that all computers and other equipment on the network to access the files very quickly. It also has built-in hardware monitoring that checks the quality of the internet connection, and automatically blocks harmful content from even reaching your computer.
